Level Divisions: Students enter the Level Divisions at age 7 and begin their official study of traditional dance technique in Level I. All levels are instructed in the etiquette and formal tradition of dance as an art form. The curriculum includes Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Modern/Lyrical and Tap. Students will progress to the next level when they have mastered the vocabulary and physical understanding required in the syllabus of their current level. Placement is determined by the Artistic Directors.

Dance

Ballet: Our ballet program is designed to provide dancers with a solid foundation of training in preparation for possible professional careers. A blending of the Vaganova, Cecchetti, and Royal Academy methods are taught in order to produce a well rounded, well educated dancer. From Intermediate Ballet onward, students are required to take a minimum of 2 ballet classes a week (excluding Pointe classes) in order to begin the more serious study of technique, positions, and turns. Accompanied by classical music, students will study technique, alignment and proper positioning of the body, arms and feet through barre work, center floor combinations, traveling progressions and choreography.

Pointe: Students may participate in our Pointe program by invitation or audition only. For the more serious dancer, this class is designed to help students learn, improve, and perfect Pointe technique, precision, and artistry through barre work, center floor combinations, traveling progressions, and choreography.

Jazz: Jazz has continued to evolve with various ethnic and cultural influences since its origin in the late 1950’s. Dancers will expand their concepts and understanding of jazz dance to cover the traditional, modern, and Hip-Hop styles. Jazz students are required to take ballet for a better understanding of dance technique.

Tap: Discover the style of the old hoofers, comparable to that of the modern style of Savion Glover and the late Gregory Hines. This camp, geared for the beginner/intermediate, will focus on the paradiddle, shuffle, flap, and cramp roll, which will increase with speed as the week progresses. It will consist of a warm-up, several rhythmic combinations, some improvisation, and the chance for you to teach and create with each other. Adjustments will be made on the first day of class for different levels of expertise.

Modern: A blending of techniques is taught through stretching, center and floor work combinations, traveling progressions and choreography. Artistry and performance, as well as mental alertness and observation skills, are emphasized. Space, time, and energy are explored as elements of movement. Modern dancers are required to take ballet for a better understanding of dance technique.

Hip Hop: A blend of hip-hop, club, cheer dance, and jazz. These various disciplines are fused together to produce a dance style with attitude. We offer classes for ages 6-adult.

Musical Theater Dance: Students will study various styles of Broadway Character Dance. The Repertory work will include Broadway & Movie Musicals. Musical Theater Dance I is for the beginning student, Musical Theater Dance II is for the Intermediate student, while Musical Theater Dance III is for the Advanced student. Ballet and Jazz are required for a better understanding of dance technique.

Creative Dance (3-5 years old): Classes are thematically-based and students are led through a series of movement stories and theater games. The creative play enhances the development of fine and gross motor skills as they run, skip, leap, stretch, and dance to the music. Social skills are develop led through collaborative and cooperative games. Students are gently introduced to a structured environment while instilling in them the physical and emotional confidence to explore and create.

Petite Ballet: Pre-Ballet is offered for students ages 4-6. The progressive curriculum introduces students to the basic shapes, positions and postures of classical ballet. Motor skills become more defined and refined as the children are challenged to mold their bodies to these very specific positions.

Pre-Dance Combo (Ballet & Tap): This class is offered for students ages 4-6 as an introduction to Jazz and Tap. The classes will develop awareness and purpose in the students’ use of the body through the use of both formal dance training and creative expression, and will strengthen the student’s sense of rhythm and musicality.

Hudson River Dance Company: Students enrolled in the various dance technique classes are provided a venue where new works can be presented. Diverse in content, style and use of various artistic mediums, HRPAC strives to weave together a unique array of works that include solos, group works, live music, dance song, creative writing and choreographic works. The debut performances are performed for community events in Fishkill and the surrounding areas before the show goes on the road.

Hudson River Youth Ballet: For our most serious students of all levels, the HRYB is comprised of students selected through annual January auditions. Company members will learn a wide range of choreography, from classical to contemporary, intended to educate and inspire both dancers and audience. Students selected will be ranked as Corps members, Soloists, and Principals to promote unity and a sense of continuity throughout the ballet program. Students move up through the ranks towards Principal based on progress, desire, attitude, and commitment.
